Poured in place rubber is installed in 4 stages. The base is prepared and primed, rubber granule is mixed with polyurethane binder on site, the wet mix is spread and troweled to a set depth, and the surface cures. A crew covers most residential decks in 1 to 3 days. The surface takes foot traffic after 24 hours and full load after 5 to 7 days.
A poured rubber surface lasts 10 to 15 years when it is installed correctly and 3 when it is not. Almost every failure traces back to the base, the weather on pour day or the mix ratio, not to the granule itself.
Seamless rubber replaces concrete, pavers and loose fill on playgrounds, sports courts, running tracks, pool decks, terraces, garden paths and building entrances. It is poured wet, so the finished surface is created on site rather than delivered.
That is the reason installation quality matters more here than with a manufactured product. The same bag of granule can produce a surface that holds for 15 years or one that lifts at the edges in a single wet season.
For playground work the governing document is ASTM F2479, the Standard Guide for Specification, Purchase, Installation and Maintenance of Poured In Place Playground Surfacing. It covers the whole chain from ordering material to inspecting the surface years later.
Before anything is ordered, settle the surface type. A seamless pour reads as 1 continuous sheet with no joints. Interlocking rubber tile is a different product with a different base and a different result.
3 items are settled before any material is mixed. The weather, the condition of the base, and the depth the finished surface has to reach.
Polyurethane binder needs air and base temperature of at least 50 degrees F, residual base moisture of no more than 4 percent, and a base with no standing water on it.
In South Florida the limiting factor is rain, not cold. The surface needs 24 hours clear after the pour, which through the summer means starting early and stopping by early afternoon.
High humidity speeds the cure and shortens working time, so crews mix smaller batches in August than they would in January. Wind is the other reason to stop, because it drives dust and debris into a surface that is still open.
Rubber is poured over concrete, asphalt or a compacted stone base, and each has its own waiting period. New concrete cures 28 days before anything goes on it. Fresh asphalt releases oils and resins that stop the binder bonding, so it is left to weather before use.
Existing slabs are ground or milled level, cracks and spalls are repaired, and height differences are screeded out. The surface is then vacuumed clean of dust and debris and primed with a polyurethane primer.
Priming is not optional. It is the layer that ties a flexible rubber sheet to a rigid slab, and a skipped primer shows up as edge lift within the first year.
On playgrounds thickness is set by fall height, not by preference. Systems are tested under ASTM F1292, which produces a critical height rating, the fall height below which a life threatening head injury would not be expected to occur. That rating has to equal or exceed the fall height of the tallest piece of equipment on site.

Treat that as a planning guide. The exact depth comes from the manufacturer ASTM F1292 test data for the specific system being installed, because the rating belongs to the tested assembly and not to the material.
The CPSC Public Playground Safety Handbook sets the layout, with the use zone extending a minimum of 6 feet in all directions from the equipment. Where an accessible route crosses the surface, ASTM F1951 and the ADA accessibility guidelines apply as well.
Once the base is signed off, the pour runs as 4 continuous moves and the crew does not stop until the section is closed.
Primer is rolled or squeegeed across the clean base and allowed to reach tack. Pouring too early traps solvent under the surface and pouring too late means the primer has skinned over and lost its grip.
Components are weighed on scales, never estimated. Per 10 square feet a crew uses roughly 4 to 4.5 pounds of polyurethane binder, 15 to 20 pounds of rubber granule or EPDM, and about 1 pound of pigment where color is being added.
Granule and pigment go into the mixer first, binder second. Mixing runs 3 to 5 minutes until every particle is wetted and the color is even, with no dry pockets at the bottom of the drum.
The mix is tipped onto the primed base, raked to rough depth against screed rails, then compacted and closed with a steel trowel. Depth is checked as the crew moves, because a low spot cannot be corrected after the cure.
On a 2 layer build the black cushion layer is poured first and the colored wear layer goes on while the base is still green, so the layers knit together instead of stacking as separate sheets.
The surface takes foot traffic after 24 hours and full load, equipment and play use after 5 to 7 days. Nothing heavy should cross it before then, including trades working nearby.
After that, maintenance under ASTM F2479 is straightforward. Rinse debris off, keep drains clear, inspect the surface and its edges at least quarterly, and repair any opened seam or loose patch while it is small.
Rubber tile is the alternative where a wet pour is not practical. Tiles run 1.2 to 2 inches thick and can be laid on prepared ground rather than a slab.
The subgrade is compacted first, then a 3 to 4 inch layer of crushed stone or screenings is placed and compacted, then a 2 to 3 inch layer of sand is leveled on top. Tiles are set from a straight edge, joined with connector pins, and the field is held in place with rubber curbing around the perimeter.
Tile installs faster and can be lifted and replaced 1 unit at a time. The trade is joints, which collect sand and grass, and a surface that never reads as continuous.
Either way the rules are the same. Prepare the base properly, work within the temperature and moisture limits, build to the depth the fall height requires, and let the surface cure before anyone uses it.
